Keeping Your Cats Safe During the Holidays

The holiday season is a magical time filled with joy, decorations, and celebrations. However, the hustle and bustle can bring hidden hazards for our feline companions. Cats are naturally curious, which makes holiday decorations, visiting guests, and festive foods a source of temptation—and potential trouble. Here are some tips to keep your cat safe and comfortable this holiday season.

Cat-Proof Your Holiday Decorations

Cats love to explore new additions to their environment, and holiday decorations are no exception. Shiny tinsel, ribbons, and fragile ornaments are irresistible to curious paws but can pose serious risks. Tinsel, for example, is particularly dangerous because it can cause intestinal blockages if swallowed, requiring emergency surgery.

To keep your cat safe, opt for shatterproof decorations and avoid placing fragile ornaments near the bottom of the tree. Secure your Christmas tree to prevent tipping and consider skipping tinsel altogether. Instead, use safe alternatives like garlands made from fabric or paper.

Additionally, be cautious about holiday plants. Poinsettias, mistletoe, and lilies are toxic to cats and can cause everything from mild irritation to severe organ damage. If you love decorating with greenery, consider artificial plants or pet-safe options like cat grass or rosemary.

Lastly, don’t forget the cords! Cats might chew on string lights or electrical wires, so use cord protectors to keep them out of reach.

Creating a Safe Space for Your Cat

While you’re busy welcoming holiday guests, your cat may feel overwhelmed by the influx of unfamiliar faces and noises. Cats thrive on routine and calm environments, so sudden changes can lead to stress.

To help your cat feel secure, create a quiet retreat in a separate room. Set up a cozy space with their favourite bed, toys, food, and a litter box. Use pheromone diffusers or sprays to further reduce stress and make the space feel comfortable.

If your cat is a social butterfly, be mindful of the front door when guests arrive. Cats are quick and might dart out unnoticed, especially in the excitement of people coming and going. Keep an eye on the entrance or put your cat in another room with a closed door to prevent escapes.

Educating your visitors, especially children, is another critical step. Remind them to approach your cat gently and respect their boundaries. A little understanding goes a long way in ensuring your cat remains comfortable during gatherings.

Keep Holiday Foods Out of Reach

The holidays bring an abundance of delicious treats, but many of these can be harmful—or even fatal—to cats. Foods like chocolate, raisins, onions, garlic, and alcohol are highly toxic. Rich, fatty dishes, such as gravy or stuffing, can cause gastrointestinal distress or pancreatitis. Even bones from meat can splinter and pose a choking hazard.

To keep your cat safe, ensure food is never left unattended. Promptly clear tables after meals and use covered containers to store leftovers. Be mindful of trash bins, as cats may rummage through them in search of tasty morsels.

It’s also worth noting that some cats are highly persistent and might sneak bites when you least expect it. If your cat consumes anything potentially harmful, contact your veterinarian immediately for advice.
