Rescue & Adoption

It's what we do

The rescue of stray and abandoned cats is at the heart of everything we do at MEOW Foundation. Every year, hundreds of stray and abandoned cats and kittens find their way through our doors. As a no-kill shelter, we offer every cat the love, care and medical treatment necessary to lead happy, fulfilled lives.

Our Rescue Program

When any cat first arrives at MEOW, they are assessed by our Intake team and booked in for an initial health check at one of our veterinary partner clinics. Before a cat can enter our Adoption Program, they must first undergo any necessary vaccines, surgery (including spay or neuter surgery), or other medical care. Some cats may require a longer stay at our Adoption Centre to monitor any ongoing medical concerns and work on behavioural barriers. Shy cats may be enrolled in our “socialization program”, where MEOW volunteers will work with them to help them become more comfortable around humans.

Not every cat that MEOW rescues is suitable for adoption. In some cases, senior cats with ongoing medical needs may be placed in a permanent foster home. Through our TNR program, feral cats are vetted and returned to their home colonies.

Our Intake department operates on an appointment-only basis. If you have found a cat in need of MEOW’s help, please contact our Intake department.

Our Adoption Program

Once a cat has been cleared for adoption, they are listed on our online Cat-a-Logue. While our cats await their adoption, they will stay at our Adoption Centre, Regal Cat Café, in foster homes, or at one of our other remote adoption locations.

Our Rescue Partners

Animal rescue is a collaborative effort. At MEOW Foundation, we are proud to work closely with our animal welfare partners. Through collaboration, we can ensure that more cats get the care they need across Alberta.

MEOW is also a founding member of the Animal Welfare Coalition of Alberta (AWC). The care and adoption of companion animals is not regulated in Alberta and together AWC members have signed and agreed to uphold a minimum standard for animal care, governance, adoption, volunteer/foster management and a code of conduct. Together we work toward common goals and improve animal welfare in Alberta
